The Angela Fleischman lab at UC Irvine is dedicated to understanding the pathogenesis of myeloproliferative neoplasms  (MPN or MPD) which includes polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, myelofibrosis). Our focus is on the role of inflammation in MPN.

Helen is a Ph.D. student studying how aging and inflammation shape hematopoietic stem cell function and clonal selection. She joined the Fleischman Lab at UC Irvine as an undergraduate. Her current research focuses on how the aged and inflammatory bone marrow environment influences hematopoietic stem cell fitness and the selection of mutant clones associated with clonal hematopoiesis. She is particularly interested in how oxidative and inflammatory stress contribute to age-related changes in blood stem cell behavior, and in exploring N-acetylcysteine (NAC) as a potential strategy to mitigate these age- and inflammation-associated effects.
